The Joy of Capturing Families: Six Months of Magic in a Newcastle Studio

As a photographer in Newcastle Upon Tyne, there’s nothing I love more than capturing milestones—and one of my favourites is the six-month session. It’s that golden age when babies can sit unaided but aren’t quite mobile enough to escape my carefully set-up props! Over the past six months, I had the pleasure of photographing a delightful family and their little one, and let me tell you, it was an adventure full of laughter, chaos, and countless beautiful moments.

Setting the Scene: A Cosy Studio in Newcastle

The studio is a warm, welcoming space designed for families to feel at home. Think soft lighting, plenty of room for siblings to explore (or cause mayhem!), and an ever-growing collection of props that range from timeless classics to quirky fun. When this particular family arrived for their first session, I knew it was going to be something special.

Their baby, just six months old and newly mastering the art of sitting up, was all smiles. Babies at this age are absolute dream subjects—they’re curious, expressive, and, most importantly, they stay (mostly) in one spot! Armed with my trusty squeaky giraffe and a repertoire of silly noises that would make anyone cringe outside of a studio, we dived straight into capturing those unforgettable first shots.

Siblings Steal the Show

Of course, no family session is complete without the involvement of siblings. The baby’s older sibling had a personality as big as the Tyne Bridge and was ready to jump straight into the action.

“Can I hold the baby?”
“Can we pretend it’s my birthday?”
“Can I be in every photo?”

They were as much a creative director as they were a model, suggesting poses, props, and even attempting to photobomb a few of the baby’s solo shots. Between their antics and the baby’s fascination with grabbing everything in sight, it was a whirlwind. The moments of sibling love—little kisses, hand-holding, and cuddles—were so pure. But naturally, there were also those wonderfully funny moments of sibling rivalry.

One standout shot features the baby beaming while the older sibling sports a dramatic pout. Pure comedy gold.

The Family Portrait Fiasco

When it was time for the family portraits, the chaos level cranked up a notch. Getting everyone to look in the same direction is always a challenge, but this family brought their own unique flair.

Dad couldn’t stop laughing. Mum had to keep wrangling the baby back to the centre of the frame. And the baby? Well, let’s just say they decided to test their crawling skills halfway through. But amongst the madness, there were moments of pure magic—a group hug that turned into a fit of giggles, spontaneous tickles, and that one perfect shot where everyone’s looking at each other instead of the camera.

Wardrobe Changes and Snack Breaks

One of my favourite parts of these longer sessions is watching the baby’s personality shine through in each outfit change. From adorable rompers to fancy little outfits, every look was more charming than the last. Of course, with great outfits come great snack requirements, and this little one had their priorities sorted: blueberries. Pro tip for parents—blueberries and white backdrops? Maybe not the best mix!

Why I Love Six-Month Sessions

Every session reminds me why I love this job. It’s not just about the photos; it’s about the connections, the laughter, and the chaos that makes family life so special. Capturing these moments for families in Newcastle is a privilege I never take for granted.

To anyone considering a professional session—whether it’s for a six-month milestone or just because—you won’t regret it. It’s more than just a series of photos; it’s a chance to freeze time and celebrate all the joy (and occasional madness) that makes your family unique.

And who knows? Maybe one day, your baby will look back and think, “Wow, I really nailed that sitting pose.”
